Good morning or afternoon to you in Milan Slovenia. As to your question ,
Oak has a high acid content and should not be used . A complete list of
"preserving your collection" can be found in the Conch-L archives . I do
remember that air circulation is of utmost importance. if your building your
own cabinets why not install a small electric fan in the back to help
facilitate the circulation, it's not only acidic materials but stagnate air
that causes the Bligh's disease. also , as I remember, high humidity can
cause problems but once again a good circulation will thwart any concern.
If I had to guess I would say that pine would be not only the cheapest but
also the least likely to cause damage. If you're to use sealants may I
recommend 1st applying a diluted coat of shellac, light sanding then at
least 2 coats of a good polyurethane, light sand and a buff with furniture
wax not pledge, this will properly seal the wood.
