If you read background material on Poe during the shell book period, it states that he was down-and-out, needing money and took on the writing project as a last resort.  It also states that he was accused of plagerizing some of the text. Sad!

Add actor Peter Strauss (Rich Man Poor Man TV mini-series, etc.) to the list of notable shell collectors.  I know for a fact that he collects Cypraea.
