Dear All:
Are Chlorostoma lischkei Tapparone-Canefri, 1874
and C. turbinatum A.Adams, 1853 separate species,
or are they just subspecies of C. argyrostoma?
I found specimens that resemble C. lischkei (with
closed umbilicus) on the west side of Lamma Island,
Hong Kong, on open-water, wave-swept rocks.
In a quiet bay on the east side, I found specimens that
resemble C. turbinatum (with opened umbilicus).
Is the closed umbilicus just an adaptation to high
surf action? I think they may be the same species,
just with a different shell morphology in different
habitat.
Thanks,
Andrew
