Dear Shelling Friends,

The good Dr. Harry Lee had this posting rejected by conch-l, so hopefully
this mechanism works better.

Dear John and Alan,

Patella Linnaeus, 1758 is typified by P. vulgata Linnaeus, 1758 by the
subsequent designation of Fleming, 1818.

Scutellastra H. and A. Adams, 1854 (vol. 1, p. 466) has "Patella gorgonica
Humphrey" as its type, subsequently thus designated by Powell (1938).
Actually, the binomen Patella gorgonica is properly attributed to da Costa,
1771 (see Whitehead, 1977), and the taxon is a consensus synonym of Patella
barbara Linnaeus, 1758.

Ancistromesus Dall, 1871 is monotypic and based on Patella mexicana Broderip
and G.B. Sowerby I, 1829.

The three generic units differ principally on anatomic features. However, in
their molecular genetic analysis, Koufopanou et al. (1999) found that
Ancistromesus fell out with Scutellastra, and they accordingly placed those
two genera in synonymy
