* The "grooming" of beaches is a huge problem, and not just for shell
collectors - see the comments in
http://karstaddailypaintings.blogspot.ca/2012/11/0-false-18-pt-18-pt-0-0-false-false.html

Beaches are places where substrate is emplaced and moved by water, and
any mechanical modification of their surface is an offense against their
nature. The real problem is the opposite of shell collecting - it's that
*everything* washed up on beaches offends an evidently abundant subset
of the human population, leading the authorities (who may often belong
to this subset themselves) to remove beachwash, rather than educating
beach users about its ecological value and species composition.
