I have used Filemaker Pro (multiple versions) for many years for both 
shell and mineral collections.  I like it and would recommend it; but 
it's not inexpensive.  If you want to use either a database 
(recommended) or a spreadsheet to catalog your collection, LibreOffice, 
an open source branch from the OpenOffice project, has both for free.  
It also includes a word processor and can read and write to Microsoft 
Office filetypes, e.g., Excel or Word files.
