Dear Listers,

Malacology has lost one of its giants. Dr. Fred G. Thompson, Curator
Emeritus of Malacology, later Invertebrate Zoology, Florida Museum of
Natural History, died this morning in Ocala, Florida.

Fred's work on American Hydrobiidae, particularly of the southeastern
states as well as New World and Paleotropical terrestrial mollusks
was pioneering and exemplary.

He will be missed by the many whose lives he enriched, e.g., the
undersigned <http://www.jaxshells.org/freshwat.htm>.

Harry G. Lee, MD FLS
