Paul & Brian,
Now you guys have gotten me confused. First, I thought C. natalis and
C. gilchristi were synonyms. Not true? Second, I have seen a lot of
variability in C. tinianus but never an indication of tents as in C.
natalis (until I really looked -- thanks Paul). I admit I only have one
specimen of C. natalis but it is definately tented. The three specimens
I have of C. tinianus are all very different, but no real tents. One is
almost solid pink with only a hint of banding, one is dark brown with
banding that could be called faded and cloudy tents, and the last is
light orange with heavy banding of again a cloudy pattern. So I guess I
have the two extremes or the typical species and not the intergrade.
All of these came from Brian over quite a few years (thanks).
Paul, are you able to scan your shells into an image? I would really
like to see the progression from C. gilchristi to C. tinianus. I know
the list won't allow that many lines but if you could send it off line
that would be great. If you like I can send you the two extremes I have
and you can let me know how they fit in.
