Interesting subject on NPR today , an archeologist working on the Miami
Circle at brickle point has found that the holes made in the limestone were
for supporting posts that held up a communal Tequesta shelter . The method
used to bore into the limestone was by using augers made from the inter
spiral of the Strombus gigas shell. This might be one of the first uses of a
mollusk for construction. Thousands of broken auger ends were found around
the site all with one end flattened indicating that the shells didn't hold
up well but did serve the purpose. Later sites were found to have been
augured by a basalt "bit" mined in the area of Macon Georgia... It appears
that the Tequesta Indians were very active traders , some of the material
found came from areas as faraway as the great lakes these being galena beads
.... Thought this might be of some interest....
