All the details of the stolen shell are in the Conch-L archives for those
who
missed it the first time.  The story first broke in the newspapers (from the
Associated Press) on January 30, 1997 so that is where you should start
looking.  There were subsequent follow-ups in the Miami Herald afterwards.
At the time, even the Chinese newspapers published photo's and an
account in Chinese.
