Simon,

Try to find a copy of:

PILSBRY, H.A. & BEQUARERT, J. 1927. THE AQUATIC MOLLUSKS OF THE BELGIAN CONGO. With a Geographical and Ecological Account of Congo Malacology. Pp. 591, 68 plts, 15 maps, 93 text-figs. Bull. Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. , vol. 53, art. 2. Based on collections of the AMNH Congo Expeditions.

This is a companion volume to PILSBRY, H.A. 1919. A review of the Land Mollusks of the Belgian Congo chiefly based on the collection of the American Museum Congo Expedition, 1905-1915. New York 370 pp., 23 (8 coloured) plates.

"Aquatic Mollusks ..." occasionally appears on antiquarian book lists at rather high prices, but its central African coverage is right in the zone for the species contained in your collection.

Also visit these Web pages, which may provide you with additional resources and literature citations:

A more recent reference for central African non-marine gastropods is:

BROWN D S 1994. Freshwater Snails of Africa and their Medical Importance. 2nd revised edition. Taylor & Francis, London, 487 pp.

The book has excellent black and white photographs with comprehensive descriptions and discussions of the gastropod species. I'm not sure if the book is still in print, but definitely worth a look, owing to the fact that you have a good collection of molluscan material from this region.

Hope this is useful.

Subject: Malawian Shells

                        Hi Conch-L folks!
I have come across some Malawian non-marine shells
in an old collection I acquired last year.
The species I have found are listed below:

                        Gastropods:

                        Bellamya capillata (Frauenfeld, 1865)
                        Bellamya jeffreysi (Frauenfeld, 1865)
                        Bulinus globosus (Morelet, 1866)
                        Bulinus nyassanus (Smith, 1877)
                        Bulinus truncatus (Audouin, 1927)
                        Gabbiella stanleyi (Smith, 1877)
                        Lanistes nyassanus Dohrn, 1865
                        Lymnaea natalensis Krauss, 1848

                        Bivalves:

                        Aspatharia nyassaensis (Lea, 1864)
                        Aspatharia wahlbergi (Krauss, 1848)
                        Mutela alata (Lea, 1864)

I can find no references at all for the bivalves...
I have multiple specimens of all species. If anybody
has any information on these species, e.g. validity of names, rarity,
references, etc, I would be very pleased to hear from you off list.
They were the last things I expected to find in the
collection as it was primarily a marine lot!
I look forward to hearing from you...
                        SIMON TAYLOR
