I'd like to point out that links to a particular web page do not in any
way infringe on the copyrights of anything: once a web-page is connected
to the internet, it is considered to be published - just as one would
publish a book or an article in a periodical. Therefore, anyone and
everyone is able to freely refer to this page - and links are the way
one refers to a page or site on the web!! Just as permission to refer
to a book or article is not required, no permission is necessary to link
to something on the WWW, since a link is not a reproduction or copy, but
simply a reference.

Of course owners of the images are making them available for use but the
owners will be retaining copyright on all of their images.
