This is an effect sometimes seen at Fort Morgan on the seaward beaches of
Mobile Point, and although it is hardly guaranteed, the effect helps to make
this one of Alabama's more interesting sites for beach collecting. The COA
meeting will, of course, be situated only a few tens of miles to the north
in the port city of Mobile.

There is a ferry across the mouth of Mobile Bay between Fort Morgan and Fort
Gaines on Dauphin Island. These old brick forts saw action in the Late
Unpleasantness, or Civil War ("Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!"), and
are open to the public. Fort Morgan has a small historical museum that
includes a couple of Fresnel lenses that were used to focus lighthouse beams
-- don't miss it if you're there.

Don't let the torpedoes bite!
