Bev,

Do you really have to stay in Bangkok the entire week? I don't know whether the city is devoid of dealers, I know you can collect freshwater and land snails in the city. But flights to Phuket, Ko Samui and other southern spots are not expensive and the collecting is good.

The food is FABULOUS almost everywhere in Thailand. One of the more expensive places I stayed outside of Bangkok was the $19/night (off-season) hotel on the beach near the airport on Ko Samui. There was a dealer/museum on Ko Samui. Of course, the shell museum in Phuket is terrific although I'd recommend going to some place a little distance from Phuket itself for best collecting and avoiding manicured beaches.
