The only place I've ever cleaned shells was near the
equator so the water was hot, hot, hot, and most
things I know about don't shrink in the heat. But
seriously, I know nothing about the water of hydration
associated with the calcium in the matrix of the shell
structure. Can one of the illustrious scientists that
participates on the list comment about the possibility
that bleaching and drying might actually cause a
measurable reduction in shell size? has anyone ever
studied this?
