Hi Stephen,
 
I've wondered just what happens to the spines , myself.  One detail I've  seen
in species of Guildfordia is a notch at the base of the spine nearest the
aperture (of the previous whorl)...could it be that the snail is using its
radula to remove the spine to make room for further growth?  Any ideas, anyone?
