Paul,

Thanks so much for your two replies. By the end of the night I'll be an
expert (yeah, right!). Just a couple of minutes before your messages
arrived, I had to email Shanghai with my best shot (as they had no idea
about the genus or species). As Jenny Cline of your group responded with a
suggestion of abalone (I further described to her a seemingly iridescent
appearance from the photograph), and as she said no species of Abalone is
currently protected under CITES at this time, I selected Haliotis varia
Linne 1758 from among the group of suggestions offered.

Again, many thanks for your help. Now that you've got my curiosity aroused,
what's the best book on the subject for a beginner?

Regards,

Norman
