Dear Marien,

I hope my previous answer helped. The FAO divisions are the ones that work best for them, given the socio-economics of the fisheries industry in the different areas, the need to find specialists in the different areas, and a limitation on the number of books they can publish on the subject. Yes, their areas are usually larger than the traditional biogeographical provinces.

The link http://www.fao.org/fishery/area/Area31/en shows the geographical boundaries I mentioned earlier, with the correction that the southern boundary reaches a little further southeast than Venezuela

The volumes are very nicely done, and I believe can be obtained from their web site. I was asked to do the shelled mollusks by their team in the early 2000s, and the chapters were published in 2002.

Subject: provinces

Dear Harry,

good answer. Below is what I replied to José, but unfortunately my Conch-L contributions are "mediated" and are only posted with much delay if at all. And yes, I think it is strange that this is happening. It all started after I lost my previous email address, about two years ago. I strongly think of quitting.

Kind regards.

Marien

Dear José,

it has occurred to me that in the area covered there is more than one faunal province, and at least one faunal province expands beyond the limits as defined by the FAO. Do you know the basis of this definition? I guess it is physical (sea water temperature?) rather than biological.
