Aaron,
 
Take a look at the test page listed below to see the difference between an
image saved as a 24 bit 16 million color image and the same image saved as
a 256 color gif.

Both have 300 dpi, but 72 dpi for the Web is sufficient and will load
quicker on your computer.
 
These images speak for themselves.  For Web use the depth of color and
resolution is less critical than for print.  For print, only a high
resolution 24 bit + image will reproduce well.
