One thing I  haven't heard in this discussion, is for collectors to
volunteer in a museum to curate thier own collection. Then at least,
everyone knows what those cryptic lables mean.
 
At the very least, when you think you might donate your collection to a
museum, spend some time there as a volunteer. See for yourself what their
resources are, and what they've already got, and how your data compares
with their standard of labelling. You might change your mind! Or, you might
decide to only donate part of the collection, or to upgrade your labels
before you kick the bucket
