Let me make one comment. You are, of course, aware of the synonomy that
occurs at the species level. In the Epitoniidae, our beloved lamellosum
has about 20 names suggested by people who didn't look very far. The
same is true in the sub-genera area. Again using the Eps., I find at
least 8 sub-genera that have already been described. An example might be
Compressiscala which is the same as Gregoriosiscala or Nipponiscala
which is the same as Depressiscala. The problem is clearly that all
references are not available to all describers. That's the generous
explanation. The other explanation, not so generous, is that the urge to
print outdistances the urge to research. I would hope that use of the
world wide web would severely cut into our plethora of synonyms.
