Spencer Tinker, author of "Pacific Sea Shells" passed away yesterday at
age 90. He is primarly known as the Director ot the Honolulu Aquarium,
but to the older shelling community in Hawaii, his book on Hawaiian Sea
Shells was a mainstay. When I was transfered to the arctic shores of
Boston in 1957, I made very frequent trips to the library to borrow his
book to identify shells that I had brought back from Hawaii.

Spenser was also a primary supporter of the Hawaiian Malacological
Society in its formative years (and later, of course). His aquarium was
the meeting hall for HMS for a very long time, and housed the best
public display of Hawaiian shells for a number of years.

We will all miss him. It seems that many of our shelling friends are
leaving of late: Burgess, Kaitcher, and now Tinker in such a short
period.

Fortunately there are an excellent group to assume their place.

Anyone with words to add to an article in IHSN are invited to do so as I
prepare an article to add to the May IHSN.
