McGregor, Stuart W., Shepard, Thomas E., Richardson, Terry D., and
Fitzpatrick, Joseph F., Jr., 1999, A survey of the primary tributaries of
the Alabama and lower Tombigbee Rivers for freshwater mussels, snails, and
crayfish: Geological Survey of Alabama Circular 196, 29 pp., 2 fig., 3 tab.

ABSTRACT: "The Geological Survey of Alabama (GSA) conducted a survey of the
primary tributaries of the Alabama and lower Tombigbee Rivers for
freshwater mussels, snails, and crayfish from 1994 to 1996. The objective
of the survey was to document existing populations of each group,
especially regarding the status of Federally protected endangered or
threatened species. During this study 30 species, subspecies, or forms of
freshwater mussels were collected, in addition to the Asiatic clam. Two
endangered and one threatened mussel species were collected alive,
including a new tributary record for one endangered species. Eleven species
of crayfish considered threatened, though not officially recognized as
such, were collected. Included in the collection were specimens
representing a range extension and new state record for one species, and
the third record in Alabama of another very rare species. Nine species of
snails representing three families were collected, including possible new
tributary records for two or those species."

The figures are maps and the tables are lists of localities. This is a work
of mainly technical interest, with environmental implications.
