Some years ago Charlotte Lloyd and I were in Tobago and noticed dead "Apple
Snails" (Ampullaria) near streams where people had had picnics of them. It
hadn't rained in over a year, an unusual occurance. We were there for a
week and the last day it rained. We got directions from someone to a stream
where the snails supposedly lived, and when we got there the newly
freshened stream was bubbling along merrily and the snails were bursting
out of a high mud bank where they'd been aestivating through the drought.
There were also some in the mud that hadn't lasted, so we got some good
specimens complete with opercs.
