Dear Henk,
There is a colony of O. lactea at my mother's home in La Habra Heights,
California, at an elevation of about 450 feet. It has been there for years
and is quite healthy. I have seen that a local handbook on land snails
illustrates this introduced snail (as such). Specimens that I have
collected had the dark aperture. They are quite an attractive shell (OK,
not Polymita, but about as good as it gets in this area).
Regards,
Scott Jordan

Dear Henk,
I thought I responded to this earlier (and forgive me if this is some
repetition here), but here is what I know about Otala in Florida:
I found a colony of O. punctata at a beachfront rental property in
Fernandina
Beach, Nassau Co. on July 13, 1993. The inner margins of the shells' lips
were
cream-colored. The snails were still there in 1998. See
<http://home.sprynet.com/~wfrank/checklis.htm>.
Phil Poland has been tapping a St. Petersburg, Pinellas Co. population of
O.
lactea for a while; see <http://home.sprynet.com/~wfrank/otala.htm>. The
non-albino shells have all dark brown inner lips.
from the Americas outside Florida, I have:
BERMUDA. On cultivated plants, shopping area, St. George, S.E. 5/91. O.
lactea.
USA. Texas. Empty shell below Waco Dam, McLennan Co. C. S. Wolf! Fall,
1977. O.
lactea. Outer lip margins pale ? faded.
USA. Texas. East side of Killean, Bell Co. Inez Anderson ! 8/15/78. O.
lactea.
Outer lip dark brown.
URUGUAY. On plants, sand dunes 100 m. from ocean, Rocha. Bruce Crystal!
11/96.
Outer lip cream-colored.
Dr. David Robinson was tracking these and other introductions while helping
with their interception at ports-of-entry as recently as two years ago.
Then
he was at <[log in to unmask]>.
