Yes, it is a difference whether a noun is of Latin or Greek origin.
All Greek nouns with the ending "-o" (such as "to neró" = water), "-i" ("to
paidí" = child)) and "-ma" [not "-a"!] (as "to sóma" = body, [póma, stóma]
are neuter.
Greek nouns with the ending "-a" ( "i mytéra" = mother) are also female.
