Hi Ellen and all,

Take a look at http://uncpress.unc.edu/interviews/o_pilkey_interview.htm

I can't recall what they said in this book "How to Read a North Carolina Beach: Bubble Holes, Barking Sands and Rippled Runnels" about the explanation -- and someone borrowed my copy. It's worthwhile reading and useful for non-Carolina beaches I'm sure.

When you think of the long and gloomy history of man, you will find more
hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have
ever been committed in the name of rebellion. -C.P. Snow, scientist and
writer (1905-1980)
