Yes, I know many fossils can be found w/o maybe due to quick changes on habitat, but in this case it
was not a fossil – it was probably simply stuck alive under a rock and died this way.

I'm one of many who have found a number of specimens of the naticid Naticarius plicatellus (Conrad,
1841) with opercula in situ while combing the APAC Mine in Sarasota and other Caloosahatchee
Formation exposures. These shells have had ample time (2,000,000 years) to render their contents
inorganic.
