Hi John,
I posted this yesterday already, but for some unknown reason it did not show
up on Conch-L. So here we go again....
Natica tigrina (Röding, 1798), originally described as Cochlis tigrina
Röding, 1798, is a valid taxon which applies to a common Recent Western
Pacific naticid. A synonym of N. tigrina (Röding, 1798), which is still
occasionally used in some publications, is Natica maculosa Lamarck, 1822.
The European Miocene fossil Natica tigrina Defrance, 1825 is a species
different from N. tigrina (Röding, 1798). Thus, being a homonym, it normally
would require a new name (a replacement name).
If such a replacement name for N. tigrina Defrance, 1825 has been suggested
before 1961, that replacement name is to be used as the new valid name (I do
not know if this is the case). If no such name has been suggested, an
available synonym may be adopted, or a new name may be generated. This has
been done in 2001 by Lozouet et al., who used the available synonym "Natica
crassiuscula Grateloup, 1847" as a replacement name for Natica tigrina
Defrance, 1825.
However, Natica tigrina (Röding, 1798) is currently placed in the genus
Notocochlis. Therefore, as long as Natica tigrina Defrance, 1825 and
Notocochlis tigrina (Röding, 1798) are not considered conspecific, and if no
replacement name for Natica tigrina Defrance has been suggested before 1961,
the name Natica tigrina Defrance, 1825 can stay in place (and actually has
to stay in place), and is valid.
