  The Latin word imbecillis means weakness, usually in the context of old age. The English word
imbecile comes to us through the French imbécile where the meaning was restricted to weakness of
mind. I do not know the species of mollusk involved, but I would suspect it to have weak sculpture.

I will refrain from extraneous comment, although it is tempting.
