Just using "Rice's Prices" may not be a universal solution for appraising
collections in the future.
First, Tom has stopped publishing it.
Second, it is just a compilation of dealers asking prices at the retail
level from mailed listings rather than wholesale prices dealers would
actually pay. This is an important distinction, I think.
Third, there is often a wide range of prices listed for entries. This is
designed to adjust for a so-so specimen and an exceptional specimen.
Sometimes it is hard for the seller and buyer to agree on where in the
spectrum a particular shell falls when a very wide range is listed.
If a species has not been listed by a dealer recently, there is no price
information provided.
Does anyone know if there will be a new publisher and future editions of
something that can replace this guide to pricing after the last edition Tom
issued becomes outdated?
