Scot -
I'm not an insurer nor do I have insurance on my extensive collection.
I think I'd consider the following :
1. select a well known authority and see if they would value the
collection for insurance purposes.
2. Best I think - Have your insurance person call corporate claims
division and find a person they trust
in your region. They might have expert opinion for many purposes as
well as pure insurances.
#1 would mean a person of stature from an impeachable place. To make
the validity obvious to the causal
consideration and pass this information to the insurance agent
and inquire if this person is a valid evaluator.
It might cause them (corporate, regional...) to think and
consider the case and you might be providing them
with a good estimator they might use at a later time/case. (..and
make money on the side for his own needs.)

California and my collection is housed in my carriage house, second floor (Circa 1910). The possibility of it getting destroyed is real. The last time I mentioned it to my agent, she did not know where to start. I added up my purchase costs recently and was kind of shocked at how much I had invested. I am primarily Olividae, but have a wide ranging selection of other species also.
