Regarding an 8/ 2015 and earlier threads of places recommended for shelling in South Carolina I would like to add Bulls Island to the list, this locality has not come up on any previous posts in Conch-L. This barrier island is very reminiscent of Cumberland Island in terms of flora and fauna- Spanish moss, amazing live oaks, lots of 'gators (sprawled out on the trails in several places)- and layout/logistics, but on a smaller scale, far less people or facilities. The beachdrift was very sparse on my visit - weather head been too good- but there were still ample fresh Busycons and - past "Boneyard Beach" (a very photogenic skeletal forest) other people found large fossil Busycon. I got a nice Dinocardium pair and some other nice bivalves, and saw pieces of tuns, scotch bonnets etc. I am sure at times the shelling is really good. To get to Bulls Island you take a small ferry from Awendaw SC (NE of Charleston)...search online for "Bulls Island Ferry". Its a much much smaller boat than the one for Cumberland Is so in 'high' season reservations might be prudent. We 'walked up' on a weekday and there were about 25 people in total going over.
