Dear Drew,
I can't find your personal email address in the Conch-L directory, so I'll
briefly resuscitate the thread you started (below).
A friend of mine at USGS, John Pojeta, has located a USGS historical
speciealist:
Clifford M. Nelson
Staff Geologist
USGS Library, MS 950
National Center
Reston, VA 20192
(703) 648 6080.
Dr. Pojeta quickly determined that Ernest Ingersoll (1852-1946) was with the
Hayden Survey (Colorado, eyc.) in 1872, 1874, and 1877. Ingersoll was with
the New York Tribune (a journalist like Calvin Goodrich) and apparently
tried to popularize the natural history of the American West. He is
featured in "Who was who" volume 2, p. 275 (1950), a reference found in
larger libraries. He is also mentioned in Richard Bartlett (1962) "Great
Surveys of the American West" pp. 105-106.
Dr. Gene Coan <[log in to unmask]>, apparently an alumnus of
this list, has a keen interest in the history of the malacology of the
American West.
Hope this investigation will be of interest to others as well as Drew.
