In the past two months there has been articles about double opercula in
some species and two canals in Cypraea in the Internet HSN, and in
CONCH-L. I also included a faked photo of a Cyp. gaskoini with two
anterior canals in June IHSN to demonstrate how easy it is to create a
fake.

Yesterday, examining a routine set of photos of V.(Costellaria)
pacificum animal, I noted what appears to be a second set of tentacles
and eyes very displaced on the foot pedestal to the posterior. The
second set is about a fourth the size of the "real" set being less than
a half mm across. Being this small, my photo isn't extremely clear, but
it shows in several other views as being present. The eyes on the
"real" tentacle/eye group also seem to have the eyes on the same side of
the tentacle base, which is very unusual. There are some other items
that are not typical as well.

Any mitra-familiar biologist want to do an autopsy? The shell and
animal are in alcohol as usual. I would send along a set of photo
prints as the colors of a preserved animal change very rapidly, so that
people working with dead animals do not see the coloration of the living
animals. If you want to work with the animal, Email me directly. Might
be desirable to post to CONCH-L that the specimen is being sent to you.

Aloha,

Wes
