Those of you who live in the Washington DC area may like to know that Geerat
Vermeij will be speaking at the National Museum of Natural History tomorrow
afternoon.

THE LINK BETWEEN EVOLUTION AND ECONOMICS, lecture by University of
California geology professor Geerat Vermeij on the parallels between
evolutionary innovation and economic growth. National Museum of

Wed 15    Evolutionary Innovation: The Link between Evolution and Economics.
Senate of Scientists Distinguished lecturer Dr. Geerat Vermeij, Professor,
Department of Geology,University of California at Davis holds that the
conditions for evolutionary innovation are identical to the conditions
favoring economic growth. Evolution and economics are both founded on common
principles of competition, selection, and inequality. Recipient of the
Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal by the National Academy of Sciences and MacArthur
Award Recipient, Vermeij uses the example of a minor type of innovation in
the shells of snails to illustrate the parallels between evolutionary
innovation and economic growth showing that we can learn important things
even from the most esoteric sources. Baird, 3:30 p.m.
