Dear Scott,

the second reference to Hidalgo´s works you mentioned is

Hidalgo, J. G.
Catalogue des mollusques testaces marins des cotes de l'Espagne et des Iles Baleares / par M. le Docteur J. Gonzalez Hidalgo.-- Paris : F. Savy, 1867.-- 162 pages, 1 lam. ; 22 cm.

It is a special issue of "Journal de Conchyliologie", april-july and october issues in 1867.

It is the French traslation of his well-known work on the marine faunas of the Spanish and Balearic coasts. There is a copy of the work in Spanish re-published in 1977 as "Works of the Natural History Museum" in Madrid. There is also a copy of the French translation. It is likely they can send you a photocopy if you ask for it.

I don´t work on marine faunas so I never studied this work. However, during the second half of the XIX century a huge amount of works on different topics were carried out in Spain in order to make the Geological map; this task involved the greatest scientific adventure ever developped inside Spain: the results were obtained during sixty years and published until 1930´s. These works are the origins of most of the Spanish scientific institutions and the collections built by that time (archaelogical, palaeontological, geological and natural history collections) became the grounds of the Spanish Museums.
The former is to explain that Hidalgo´s work is the best that were known about marine testacean molluscs in the Spanish and Balearic coasts......by 1867.

The reference can be found in the CSIC Libraries Network (OPAC) and the site has an English version.

Best wishes,
Ana.
