A "purple" cowrie suggests one that has been etched, either chemically or
physically.  A number of common cowries, like C. tigris, C. arabica, and C.
caputserpentis have a purplish layer of shell below the outer layers which
contain the visible pattern.  When the outer layers are eroded or buffed or
dissolved away, the purple color shows.
