All the prior examples are much too tame. I have in my library a
wonderful little paper written by P. G. Parkinson (the Pettifogging
Press, 1979) and published in 40 copies (this being #19) titled:

'A consideration of the systematics of the New Zealand Rhytididae
(Mollusca: Pulmonata) with a repudiation of the nonsensical "Ring
Species" speculation lately indulged in by Dr. Climo.'

As my kids would say, "Climo, you been dissed"!

Ciao,
Scotty

Subject: Send me your flame-outs

Colleagues,

For some years I have kept a little file of 'malacological flame-outs'.
These are little moments from the literature when authors could not
contain themselves. Their comments usually refer unflatteringly to the
work of others, such as when B. B. Woodward - in the Zoological Record -
accused the author of the new genus and species Extra extra of 'trifling
with his colleagues'.
I suspect other people have also kept such mementos, and think that a
number of the better ones could be stitched together to make an
entertaining article. I therefore invite all and sundry to send me their
'flameouts', and if enough arrive I'll write them up and submit them to
an appropriate publication. I need the exact quote, and the full
reference including page number.
