Hi Tim and others interested.,

1) depauperatus is merely a form of maculatus in my opinion. I have had the
privilege to study two syntypes and I have found no distinguishing features
to make a clear separation on (sub)species level between the two. Many
species of Strombidae (and possibly) have "depauperate" forms probably due
to circumstances as nutrition. Most recent example: Lambis adamii, which is
a depauperate form of Lambis lambis.
2) No, it is not a species in my opinion. See:
Kronenberg, G.C., 1999. Revision of Euprotomus Gill, 1870. 2. On the
identity of Strombus hirasei Kuroda, 1942 (Gastropoda Proso-bran-chia:
Strombidae). - the Festivus 31(6): 63-67.
and
Kronenberg, G.C., 2002. Addendum to a revision of Euprotomus Gill, 1870. 2a.
On the identity of Strombus hirasei Kuroda, 1942 (Gastropoda
Proso-bran-chia: Strombidae). - the Festivus 34(9): 110.
Both issue of The Festivus probably still available through
Ms. Carole Hertz
3883 Mt. Blackburn Ave.
San Diego
CA 92111
USA
3) No.

Gijs
