Odd story.

On the science channel(IIRC) the cause was from the massive spread of
that blasted
COT starfish that spreads like nothing else and can
eat it self to death within a reef area.

I saw where they were being picked and killed, but it is like killing an
ant hill
with a stick.  Those evil stars have spread over the warm oceans.

I have some stars in my collection, but never that one.  "Crown of Thorns".

We had a few mid Pacific - equator and dateline - in the 60's.  I wonder
what happened post our leaving.  I'll inquire.
