In the case of some mollusks, the trap itself may be what attracts them.  A
traditional method of fishing for octopus is to lower an old jar on a line
and give the octopus time to move in.  Dr. Ruth Turner has studied deep-sea
wood-boring bivalves by sinking boards to the bottom and retrieving them.
