Hi Art, Hi Andy,
This kind of seems like a private conversation, but may I butt in for a
second? As far as species interbreeding, this can and does happen in
areas of overlap. I have seen it occur among certain chiton species that
were living on the limited environment of an old barge. Now as to
whether the results were "mules", I have no idea. But I do know that this
is a common phenomenon within the avian community, and new "species"
which reproduce progeny with the same characteristics as the parents
have developed in the wild. And where geographic separations in
populations occur over long periods of time species modifications have
been documented. Wouldn't it be the same for all living species?
