Yes, Bobbi, and I applaud your actions.

I think the only way shell collecting can be attractive to youngsters is if
it competes with the school band, ballet lessons, the gymbaroo, etc. is if
it becomes one of those after school activities that parents feel so
obliged to take their children to. Of course the children love it. of
course they like identifying things, all children do. Just don't forget
that without the approval (and cars and time) of their parents these kids
wouldn't be there. The parents will find the time to send their children
along if the parents are interested.

Our shell club is small. None of the members that regularly attend meetings
have small children. In fact the meetings and excursions are extremely
child-unfriendly. I guess this is the way a majority of shell clubs
operate. When you have a married couple among your members, at least one of
them will stop coming when the first child comes along. They will most
likely also stop coming on excursions.

You are lucky in having a shell club that recognises shelling as a family
activity, and parents who continue to support the club in this way (i.e.
they bring their children). Most clubs are not so lucky.
