Andy:
     Harold Mathiak's book: "A river survey of the unionid mussels of
Wisconsin 1973-1977" has a colored photo of freshwater mussel trails.
Essentially this is out of print, but one of the freshwater persons in your
area should have it.  If you want this, and have trouble finding the book, let
me know.
