Dear Kurt (and other on conch-l)

No, a lectotype can also be a figured specimen. E.g., Linnaeus described a
lot of species which he actually never handled. But he referred to
illustrations in books like that of Gualtieri, Rumphius and others. Some of
these figures have subsequently been selected lectotype.
