About 5 years ago, I found the remains of 9 recently dead
Argonauta nouryi on the beach at Salango, Ecuador, about
2.5 degrees south of the equator. I found them together in a
clump, mangled and crushed but not decomposed. They
appeared to have been vomited up by a bird (frigate or pelican
would be the most likely). Due to the condition of the
specimens, it was not possible to reconstruct them all.
However, a number of egg masses and (at least) 5 animals
were found with the broken egg cases. Three of the animals
were still partially in the egg case with their eggs. The eggs
were pale yellow and about 1 mm in diameter. It seems likely
that the female stays with the eggs in their "shell" for at least
a while after laying them.
