Dear Paul and all,
There are Wentletraps on Ft. Myers Beach, so there should certainly be some
on Sanibel. The people who would really know are Jose Leal at the Bailey-
Matthews Shell Museum and Biddy Dean of the Sanibel club, who has found every
shell possible to find on Sanibel during her daily beach walks. .
The other interesting thing about the forgeries is that John and Esther
Lewis, now of the Sarasota Shell Club, some years ago commissioned a Rice
Paste forgery. It was very large, maybe that is the size they commissioned,
and the only thing odd about it was the operculum, which was a much darker
color than the originals. Other than that, it was very difficult to tell from
an original.
I am sure they still have it, and it is certainly an interesting oddity,
but proof that one could indeed be made.
