I'm going through a batch of beached shells from Australia that I picked up in 1998.

I have one Cypraea, 2 Cm long that is solid chestnut brown on top and white on the aperture side.

I don't see anything like this in my books. 

Am I correct that this is an animal that died before the final layers of shell were produced?
