I've heard that the "mystery" of mystery snails is where are the eggs.
The answer is inside the female, hence the genus Viviparus.
Similarly, as ampullarids are marketed as mystery snails for aquaria,
the mystery is supposedly how an aquatic snail gets its eggs up well
out of the water.
There's also the mystery of why people are idiotic enough to introduce
a rice-eating ampullarid into southeast Asia instead of trying to
cultivate the native species that the locals actually like to eat.
